I’ve had an idea stewing in my mind for some time now to get a beater Mercedes SLC and build a road going Mampe tribute car:
When i say beater, I’m talking about a solid running car in the lower end of the price range and not a salvage operation. The plan is to do as much as I can on my own, rebuild a period correct Mercedes V8 for streetable horsepower without going over the top and update to some modern goodies where it’s appropriate. I’d keep the thing street legal and maybe even keep the back seat so I can take my kids for a ride.
Aesthetically I’d go all in with the flares, wheels, etc., but with the obvious concessions to legalities (indicators would have to be added).
Other than the fact that i really shouldn’t be spending money i don’t have, is this a terrible idea?

I did look into this a while back, there is only one source I found for the replica bodywork. I ended up with my 240Z, but I considered it!

Suggestion, if you want to get talked out of drinking tomorrow night don’t go to a bar and ask the clientele what they think.
I say go all in on the street legal race car project.

Perhaps asking oppo to talk me out of it was not the right thing. I guess I’m looking for someone to tell me what the pitfalls of such a project may be.
Does this sound like a difficult project? Are the SLC’s notoriously difficult to work on or parts difficult to get a hold of?

I would think the parts would be expensive. You’d be pretty exclusive though at the car show or the track.
